Jamaica travel tips

Dos, don’ts, and other useful information

  • LANGUAGE

The official language of Jamaica is English, but the most spoken language is Jamaican Patois. However, if your English is good you’ll have no problem communicating with the Jamaicans. Ya Mon!

  • CURRENCY

The official currency of Jamaica is the Jamaican Dollar, but American Dollars are accepted by almost all vendors - especially in tourist areas. Bring some smaller notes (1 and 5 USD) with you, if you decide to leave the resort, to tip taxi drivers and tour guides.

  • ELECTRICITY

The electricity plugs in Jamaica are Type A and Type B, and the voltage is 110V. This is the same as in the U.S., so no travel adapters will be needed.

  • GETTING AROUND

Although you can travel by bus or rent a car, taking a taxi cab is the safest way to get around in Jamaica. Ask the receptionist at the resort to book one for you. Avoid getting into a taxi without a red number plate. Note: at Sandals Resorts your transfer from and to the airport is included in the booking price!

  • TIPS AND GRATUITIES

In Jamaica, a 10 - 20% tip is encouraged for good service at restaurants and bars outside of the resort. A similar amount applies to tour guides and at the spa. At Sandals Resorts, tipping is not allowed as it is already included in your booking price. The only exceptions are the butlers and the staff at the spa. One less thing to worry about!
