The connection between rum and Jamaica runs deeper than the glass. It’s in the sugarcane fields that shape the landscape, the local distilleries that have refined their craft for centuries, and the way a well-made cocktail signals the shift into island time.
Appleton Estate is a major part of that legacy. Nestled in the heart of Jamaica’s fertile Nassau Valley, the island’s oldest distillery carries centuries of tradition. Established in 1749, the estate has long since set the standard for authentic Jamaican rum. Time-honored expertise is passed down from one generation to the next, honed by experience and a deep respect for the land. Warm tropical days and cool evenings age each barrel, while natural spring water and locally grown cane root the flavor firmly in Jamaica.
That history welcomes you in as you walk the estate itself. A curated tour with our partner, Island Routes, is an easy trip from your stay at any Sandals® Resort in Jamaica. The day begins with exploring the storied distillery grounds. After, sample aged reserves and pick up a bottle of your favorite blend, all while soaking in the sights and scents that define Jamaica’s iconic rum culture.

Feeling inspired? Now it’s your turn. Keep the good vibes going and taste the legacy for yourself with these delicious rum-forward recipes to sip and savor.

Fun fact: the first ever Mai Tai was created with rum produced at Appleton Estate. That means you’re basically tasting a sip of cocktail history.

After Appleton Estate began distilling rum more than 250 years ago, Jamaicans decided to add their own island-style to the classic Old Fashioned. Today, this favorite is one of the most-ordered cocktails at Sandals’ Dunn’s Rum Club, which first opened in 2023 as a refined tribute to Jamaica, less than 70 miles from Appleton Estate.
