The Story of Sandals

Four Decades of Love, Luxury & Looking Forward

For forty years, the story of Sandals Resorts has been one of unbridled passion that began in 1981 with the dream of one man, Gordon “Butch” Stewart, to create the world’s best vacation for two people in love. Through the years, he set out to elevate the all-inclusive experience by including things others would never dream of. Today, that story is best told by the thousands of couples who have made some of their most beautiful and treasured memories here. And by the extraordinary people and places of the Caribbean whose warmth and genuine hospitality continue to surpass every expectation of care and comfort. This has always been the recipe for luxury and as we look to the future, Sandals Resorts will continue to earn your trust with the same passion of purpose. Here, love is truly all you need.

Timeline

A Look Back

1981

Gordon “Butch” Stewart’s Big Idea

What started in 1981 as one hotel in Montego Bay, Jamaica has grown into the Caribbean’s most awarded and well-known all-inclusive resort chains in the world. Sandals Founder, Gordon “Butch” Stewart stood apart by not only offering the all-inclusive concept on the best beaches, but upping the game and including more quality, choices and luxury than any other resorts in the Caribbean. Take a look at our innovation timeline for how Sandals raised the bar year after year.

1981

Sandals
Montego Bay Opens

After Butch Stewart purchased the Bay Roc Hotel in Jamaica, it was in need of renovation, but he wanted to have the resort opened in time for the always-popular winter season. Jamaican-pink Trelawny cut stone was brought in for the entrance, a new lobby and pool were built. Rooms were lavished with king-size beds - an industry first, at the time - and four months and $4 million later, the 133-room Sandals Resort Beach Club - renamed Sandals Montego Bay five years later - opened its doors.

1984

Sandals Invents the
Signature Swim-up
Pool Bar

It was architect Evan Williams who wanted to create something special, something that would be forever associated with Sandals. When he brought up the idea of building a pool with a bar in it, Butch Stewart responded, “Let’s give it a shot.” Williams designed the first lagoon-shaped pool bar at Sandals Montego Bay, with stools built right into the water next to a full-service bar. The guests went wild, and the Swim-up Pool Bar became a standard signature feature at all Sandals (and Beaches) Resorts.

1985

Sandals
carlyle opens

It may be small in size, but from the beginning, Sandals Carlyle was big on charm. With just 52 rooms nestled in a five-acre tropical garden just steps from the beach in Montego Bay, this resort appealed to those looking for an intimate boutique experience. A serene garden retreat at ocean’s edge, Sandals Carlyle was always a guest favorite.

1986

Sandals
royal Caribbean opens

Royal Caribbean Hotel was the next resort purchased by Butch Stewart. After extensive renovations at the main resort and its private offshore island, Sandals Royal Caribbean opened its doors. With its sister resort Sandals Montego Bay located less than a mile away, a unique opportunity presented itself — and the Stay at One Sandals, Play at Two concept was launched.

1987

Upgraded comfort

In the 1980s, amenities like hair dryers in the bathroom, king-size beds and clock radios weren’t the standard for hotels and resorts. It was only after a trip to Europe, where he found a blow dryer in the bathroom, that Butch Stewart understood what “luxury included” meant. All Sandals Resorts were outfitted with these then-luxurious amenities. Over the years, they’ve been upgraded to include high-grade linens, BOSE® docking stations and pillow menus.

1988

Sandals Negril opens

1987 was a banner year for Jamaica, hosting its one-millionth visitor that year. Seeing an opportunity for growth, Butch Stewart spread his wings to Negril, home to the world-famous Seven-Mile Beach. After breaking ground on the best stretch of that beach at the beginning of the following year, Sandals Negril opened in November, with all of the inclusions for which Sandals had already become known. Ten years later, the resort was expanded to include new Honeymoon Villa Suites.

1989

White-glove service with
gourmet meals

At a time when all-inclusive resorts were offering buffet dining for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Sandals was looking to up the standard. The Oleander Room, set on the beachfront veranda at Sandals Montego Bay, became the very first specialty restaurant, serving authentic Jamaican cuisine. Its popularity proved the point, and Sandals revolutionized the all-inclusive dining experience with signature white-glove service and exotic specialty dining.

1989

Sandals ocho rios
opens

Butch Stewart was raised in Ocho Rios, living by the seaside in a home called “Aguazul”. He spent an idyllic childhood on the beach and on the waters, so it seemed only natural to bring Sandals home with him. Sandals Ocho Rios opened its doors on the same beach where the Chairman grew up, with his childhood home folded into the resort. The 237-room resort was a veritable paradise set along the Caribbean Riviera, nestled within a lush, Jamaican garden.

1991

Sandals grande antigua
opens

As Jamaica’s second-largest employer, Sandals was ready to bring its success to Antigua. The island had everything: the perfect climate, a stunning landscape, 365 beaches (one for each day of the year), and a warm and welcoming people. The crescent-shaped beach of Dickenson Bay was known to be one of the Caribbean’s best, and that’s where Sandals made its first home outside of Jamaica. With the opening of Sandals Grande Antigua, Sandals became the largest operator of fully all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean.

1991

Sandals Dunn’s river
opens

Perched on the shores of Ocho Rios, Sandals Dunn’s River joined the Sandals portfolio as the first in Jamaica in 1991. At the time, this groundbreaking property ushered in a new level of luxury, boasting the Caribbean’s largest swimming pool and first pizzeria at a Sandals. It stood as an alluring attraction that garnered rave reviews and affection from around the globe.

1991

First rondovals™

Just as a wedding ring is a symbol of infinite love, Sandals designed their suite-in-the-round to surround guests in eternal love. The first Rondovals made their debut at Sandals Grande Antigua, offering 20-foot conical roofs, luxurious spa-style bathrooms and private patios nestled in a lush tropical garden or opening to the beach. With this new category of suite, Sandals became known for their innovation in luxury accommodations.

1991

Stay at One, Play at Six
Resorts in Jamaica

As Sandals opened more restaurants in Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios, it became clear that each resort had its own unique personality. Each resort also offered its own amenities and speciality restaurants, and to give guests even more to do, Sandals extended the Stay at, Play at concept to all six resorts in Jamaica, offering complimentary transfers between resorts.

1992

Sandals adds a golf
course

Sandals added green to its game when they acquired the popular Upton Golf Course in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. After an extensive upgrading of its fairways and greens, the 6,600-yard, par-71 course located seven hundred feet above sea level was renamed Sandals Golf & Country Club. Guests at nearby Sandals Resorts got another fantastic land sport and it was included with their vacation.

1992

New Loft suites created

Ever the innovators, Sandals created a whole new category of suites at Sandals Negril. The addition of these two-story suites raised the bar on luxury in the Caribbean, with spacious accommodations that put the bedroom above the open concept living space below. What’s more, these suites were closer to the water’s edge than any other accommodations at Sandals.

1993

Introducing the ultra
all-inclusive vacation

It wasn’t enough to be an all-inclusive resort because Sandals had, from its beginnings, been offering guests more inclusions than any other resorts in the Caribbean. And to let guests know what to expect, Sandals introduced the Ultra All-Inclusive Vacation, offering more gourmet dining options, premium accommodations, an expansive variety of land and water sports, an extraordinary staff and unparalleled service.

1993

Sandals regency la toc
opens

With its iconic Pitons looming over impossibly blue waters, Saint Lucia seemed a natural fit for the Sandals family. The former La Toc estate, once considered the most glamorous resort in the Caribbean, was acquired and renovated. With its opening, the 272-room resort set on 155 acres of lush, rolling hills, offered guests a nine-hole golf course and a perfect, crescent-shaped beach. A $15 million expansion in 1999 added The Villas on Sunset Bluff including 56 luxurious suites, a restaurant and a cliff-side pool with a swim-up bar.

1993

Plunge pools added
to suites

Sandals added another level of luxury at Sandals Regency La Toc. Butch Stewart’s “innovation not imitation” philosophy was extended to The Villas on Sunset Bluff, where luxurious one- and two-story accommodations were built with private plunge pools set 50 feet above the Caribbean Sea, giving guests endless romance, unparalleled luxury and spectacular views.

1993

Island-hopping
is introduced

With more Sandals resorts being added to the Caribbean, the company launched its Island-Hopping program, letting guests experience more Sandals Resorts in one vacation. Sandals advisors helped guests tailor-make their own itineraries, letting them hop to another resort or another island for a day, a weekend, or even the week. They could even change their room categories. It was just another way to give couples more ways to experience Sandals and the Caribbean.

1994

Sandals halcyon beach
opens

Saint Lucia’s extraordinary beauty inspired Sandals to build a second resort just a ten-minute drive from Sandals Regency La Toc. With its lush gardens lining a picture-perfect shoreline, this veritable Garden of Eden was named Sandals Halcyon Beach Resort, offering guests 170 rooms and access to all the amenities - including the nine-hole golf course - at Sandals Regency La Toc, launching the Stay at One, Play at Two exchange program in Saint Lucia.

1994

First over-the-water
restaurant

With its low-key, laid-back atmosphere, postcard-perfect setting on the sea, and calm waters, Sandals built its first over-the-water restaurant at Sandals Halcyon Beach. The Pier Restaurant, as it was called when it opened, offered gourmet Caribbean cuisine on its own pier extending 150-feet out over the sea. Today, Kelly’s Dockside offers a fusion of seafood favorites and Saint Lucia’s delectable Creole cookery, all served up with a view of Saint Lucia’s fiery sunsets and lush volcanic mountains.

1994

Named World’s leading
all-inclusive and top
Caribbean hotel group

By the mid-1990s, Sandals had earned the trust and respect of travel agents, offering a superior all-inclusive product, an exceptional guest experience and more ways for travel advisors to earn more commission. This love affair was taken to a whole new level at the first annual World Travel Awards, when travel advisors in over 50 countries cast their vote and named Sandals the World’s Leading All-Inclusive and Top Caribbean Hotel Group — distinctions Sandals has held every year since.

1995

A new ambassador for
sandals

Sandals biggest ambassador joined the company in 1995, and she was a beauty. Lady Sandals, as she was so aptly named, is a 138-foot yacht that was always meant to be more than a pleasure cruiser. Since her launch, Lady Sandals sailed from port to port, serving as a floating classroom used to educate our travel partners about all things Sandals - with Sandals usual style and panache.

1996

Sandals royal
Bahamian & offshore
island opens

When the opportunity arose to expand its horizons to The Bahamas, Sandals grabbed it. After purchasing the former Balmoral Club, once the winter playground for royalty and celebrities alike, Sandals spent the next year renovating it, spending $150 million to add an additional 210 luxury rooms and oceanfront suites, two gourmet restaurants (for a total of six), an 8,900-square foot swimming pool, the company’s first world-class European-style spa, and a 25-acre offshore island.

1996

First pub opens

While Sandals Royal Bahamian was undergoing its extension renovation, Butch Stewart was in England, where he found himself sitting in a pub. It was there he decided that, with its British sensibilities, Sandals Royal Bahamian needed a British Pub. Antique pub fixtures and furnishings were purchased and shipped from all over the United Kingdom, and reassembled at the resort. With its menu of traditional British fare and ales, Cricketer’s is as authentic as any pub found in the British Isles.

1996

First Teppanyaki
Restaurant

It was a novel concept for an all-inclusive: a restaurant where the chefs prepared the meal right at the table. But Kimonos was perfect for the brand, combining the best of Sandals by offering extraordinary cuisine and unlimited entertainment. Chefs don't just prepare the meal; they make the meal a show. Guests sit around the teppanyaki table while chefs slice, dice, saute, stir fry, and flambe every menu selection. Today, Kimonos is found at ten Sandals and two Beaches® Resorts.

1997

Beaches Negril Opens

It all began when guests started telling Butch Stewart how much they loved Sandals. 'But we have families now,' they added. "What do we do with our kids while we're away?" With that, Beaches Resorts was born, offering families, singles, and couples an all-inclusive vacation. Beaches Negril in Jamaica was the brand's first build, a 225-room resort on the famed Seven-Mile Beach that incorporated environmental values into every aspect. Later he added an 18,000-sq.-ft. pirate-themed waterpark with waterslides and a lazy river.

1997

Beaches Turks & Caicos
Opens

Just months after the opening of its first resort, Beaches opened the doors to Beaches Turks & Caicos in Providenciales. The resort offered something for everyone, an activity center for youngsters, a state-of-the-art Sega Center for gamers, and a European-style spa. Set in a destination known for its incredible reefs and walls, a first-class dive operation was also offered. The 225-room resort was expanded over the years, and now boasts five unique villages, each infused with its own personality and amenities.

1997

First Café de Paris

Beaches Turks & Caicos was the first Sandals or Beaches Resort to offer an authentic French-style patisserie. Café de Paris served sweet treats just like you'd expect to find in Paris, along with specialty coffee and tea. With bistro seating, guests could sit down and enjoy freshly made éclairs, tartlettes, macaroons, meringues, cake, and pastry puffs at their table, or take them back to the pool or to their suite.

1998

Green Globe Distinction

From its beginning, Sandals ran its resorts with an eye for protecting the environment. Sandals Negril was only the fifth resort in the world - and the very first all-inclusive resort - to become Green Globe Certified. Within three years, all 15 Sandals and Beaches Resorts earned that designation, demonstrating the exacting standards Sandals took when it came not just to guest services, but to their responsibility to the environment. And in 2008, Sandals Negril became the first resort in the world to earn the Green Globe Platinum Certification.

1999

Pirates Island
Waterpark Opens at
Beaches Turks & Caicos

After a $4 million investment, Beaches Turks & Caicos opened the state-of-the-art Pirates Island Waterpark and kid's center. This entertainment complex was the ultimate Robinson Crusoe experience for kids, with exhilarating waterslides, a kiddie pool with swim-up kid's bar, a 50s diner, game room, and Sega Center. Over the years, the waterpark would be expanded with a 650-foot lazy river, the Caribbean's first SurfStream® Surf Simulator, and even a 42-foot SkySlide.

1999

Sandals Select Loyalty
Program Launched

Recognizing the loyalty of guests who return to Sandals time after time, Sandals created a loyalty reward program—Sandals Select. From their very first stay, guests have access to unique privileges like in-room welcome packages and treats, members-only events, spa services, in-room check-in and, of course, the ability to earn points toward free stays.

2000

First Soy Sushi Bar Opens

Sandals expanded its culinary horizons once again with the addition of its very first sushi restaurant. Soy Sushi Bar opened at Sandals Ocho Rios in Jamaica, serving guests the freshest sushi, created by authentic sushi chefs, just steps from the seaside.

2002

Beaches Ocho Rios Opens

With even more demand for all-inclusive family vacations, Beaches opened its third resort, Beaches Boscobel Resort & Golf Club. An $18 million expansion and refurbishment created the perfect family resort featuring an Xbox Game Oasis Game Garage, complimentary golf for everyone - including kids - a luxury European-style spa, and five restaurants. Five years and $3 million later, the 27,000-square-foot Pirates Island Waterpark opened with 10 new waterslides. In 2012, after a multimillion dollar renovation, Beaches Boscobel became Beaches Ocho Rios Resort & Golf Club.

2002

Sandals Grande
St. Lucian Opens

Sandals opened its third resort on Saint Lucia with the addition of Sandals Grande St. Lucian on the calm waters of Rodney Bay. After a $10 million renovation, this Five Star Diamond property situated on a 17-acre peninsula, let guests Stay at One, Play at Three Sandals resorts on the island. With 284 rooms offering breathtaking ocean views, the resort offered Sandals signature RondovalTM suites-in-the-round with private plunge pools, just steps from the beach, and an over-the-water restaurant serving the finest cuisine.

2003

Relax: That's an Order!

To thank and show support for the U.S. Armed Forces, Butch Stewart launched OPERATION RELAX, granting millions of dollars in complimentary vacations to Sandals and Beaches to active duty members of the military. Though Sandals and Beaches offered complimentary hospitality to returning members of the armed forces following the Persian Gulf War, OPERATION RELAX allowed the company to make a long-lasting contribution to the well-being of those who serve and protect.
